The Greek reputation for strikes and protests is long and storied. Demonstrations are frequent and many pedestrians often pass without notice. However, the recession and resultant austerity crisis of 2008 tested Greek patience with the government, intensifying the people’s anger.
Many believed the working class were sacrificed for the benefit of the power elite and violent protests ensued.
Police and protesters played violent cat-and-mouse games across the ancient city. Injuries and arrests a constant, property damage inevitable. A sense of futility hangs in the air in the cradle of western democracy.
