MAIDAN | UKRAINE
FEBRUARY, 2014 - Independent Journalism
IN LATE 2013 a protest against then-President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych and his pro-Russian government birthed an encampment in the Maidan, a popular square in central Kiev. Armed with stones, fire bombs, and burning tires, protesters defended their tiny territory from authorities eager to squash the rebellion.
The violence culminated in Yanukovych’s flight to Russia and the beginning of an ongoing struggle for Ukraine’s future.
